Alex Preston: W.G. Sebald – East Anglian Wanderer

WG Sebald (born May 18, 1944, Wertach, Allgäu, Germany—died December 14, 2001 in Norwich) was a German-English novelist, essayist, poet, and scholar who was known for his haunting, nonchronologically constructed stories. His best-known book is Austerlitz (2001), which won the National Book Critics Circle Award.

Author and journalist Alex Preston took to writing and teaching after a career in the City. He wrote his PhD on WG Sebald author of Austerlitz and The Rings of Saturn first published in 1955, about the author’s solitary and melancholy walks around East Anglia and the Suffolk coast. Alex plays cricket for the Author’s Cricket Club, founded in 1892. Authors who have played for the team include PG Wodehouse, AA Milne, JM Barrie and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
