Mike Lowndes – Frederick Barnes, the man who made Victorian Orford

This talk is about the life and work of Frederick Barnes (1814-1898), a Victorian architect born in London. He opened his own practice in Ipswich in 1849 spending the next 40 years working for the merchants, landowners, industrialists and institutions of Suffolk. His output was enormous, 200 documented buildings. No single architect contributed to the look of Victorian East Suffolk more than Barnes. His legacy is all around us and nowhere is this more apparent than in Orford…
Mike Lowndes is a senior director at Litchfields, a town planning consultancy where he leads Heritage, Townscape and Design Advisory Planning Teams. Recent projects include BBC Broadcasting House, National Portrait Gallery, Fulham Football Club and the De La Warr Pavillion.
