Ever since a young Charles Dickens fought to get into the gallery of the House of Commons to report on its debates there has been a power struggle between politicians and those who report on what they do and say. In this country that has focussed on the BBC. Now Donald Trump – and those who admire and ape his communication skills – have learned they can bypass the media, tame it or set up their own platforms in order to swerve awkward questions and difficult facts. Nick Robinson surveys the history and asks what it means for the future.
Nick is presenter of Radio 4’s flagship Today programme alongside his TV and radio podcast Political Thinking which in the past year has featured interviews with President Joe Biden, Chancellor Friedrich Merz of Germany, Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and his predecessor Rishi Sunak in his first post Downing Street interview.Nick is the only broadcaster to have been Political Editor for both BBC and ITV News.
