William Whyte – Unlocking the Church: the lost secrets of Victorian sacred space

Walk into almost any church in England and you will encounter an environment created for you by the Victorians. They transformed not only how these places looked, but also how they were experienced. It was a revolution in taste, in faith, and in understanding; yet one that has been previously misunderstood when it’s not being ignored. This talk will explore that forgotten revolution and show why it still matters today.
After growing up in Iken, William Whyte headed to Oxford University, where he is now Professor of Social and Architectural History and a fellow of St John’s College. A trustee of English Heritage and Chair of the Blue Plaques Panel, he is an honorary Canon of Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford and the author or editor of more than a dozen books.
