Richard Barber – Henry II and Orford Castle

When Henry II came to the throne in 1154, England had suffered nearly two decades of civil war, and the countryside was littered wirg rogue castles in the hands of individual barons. His first task was to destroy as many of these as he could, and to ensure that the rest were occupied by man he could trust. He then embarked on a huge programme of building. This talk focuses on the building of Orford Castle, its purpose and how it helped Henry II’s turbulent reign.
Richard Barber has written widely on English and European medieval history and literature, from King Arthur to Edward III.
