The Making of a Borough: Orford and its Charter of Elizabeth I 1579

Margaret Poulter, Valerie Potter and Vic Harrup

Orford and its Charter of Elizabeth 1 1579 by Margaret Poulter, Valerie Potter and Vic Harrup

The present village of Orford is a mecca for visitors. It is, however, a shadow of its former self. From the building of its imposing castle between 1165 and 1173 to the late sixteenth century it was a vigorous, bustling town and a thriving port, with several royal charters to its name, and important enough to send two MPs to Parliament. This book tells the story of its rise and subsequent decline.

Cost: £14.50

The Wallace Connection

Jane Allen

From 1872 to 1884 Sir Richard Wallace owned the Sudbourne estate in Suffolk which included most of the village of Orford. On the death of his widow, the finest items in his collection were left to the nation but many other beautiful things, his money and houses were left to his secretary John Murray Scott.

This book tells the story of a remarkable family drama culminating in a High Court action involving Lady Sackville. In addition, it sheds light on many aspects of the history of Orford which has many links with people and events of national interest and importance.
