Iain Murison: Afghanistan – a genuine and personal insight

November 24, 2025 @ 6:00 pm 7:00 pm

“Of what use is decisive victory in battle if we bleed to death as a result of it” B.H. Liddle Hart

Iain Murison joined the Corps of Royal Engineers in 1984 and served for 30 years in conflicts including N. Ireland, Bosnia, Afghanistan and Iraq. This presentation discusses the Afghan campaign, focussing on counter-terrorist operations in 2001 and subsequent deployments to Helmand province.

In this challenging and complex environment mixed with extremes of high-intensity warfighting, British forces focused on early intervention, local and national development, and stabilisation. For more than a decade they encountered individuals well acquainted with the terrain, who could influence the local population most effectively and operate with invisible ease.

The Taliban was a capable and determined adversary.
