Mike Lowndes: Orford and the Norman Grid
February 26, 2027 @ 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm

The Normans laid out various new towns using a planning grid which still influences what we see today in many towns but especially in Orford. Bury St Edmunds and Anglo-Saxon town planners will also be coveredin this talk, so highly relevant to the history of our areas.
We are delighted to welcome back Mike to Butley Priory. He is a senior director at Litchfields, a town planning consultancy where he leads the Heritage, Townscape and Design Advisory Planning teams. He has worked as a planning consultant for over 25 years with a focus on comples projects in London and across the South-East. Recent projects include BBC Broadcasting House, The National Portrait Gallery, and Fulham Football Club. He is a long-standing RTPI appointed judge for the Government-endorsed Housing Design Awards programme and is a Non-Executive Director of Design for Homes.
