Minoo Dinshaw: Friends of Youth – choosing sides in the English Civil War

February 26, 2027 @ 4:00 pm – 5:00 pm

In the early 17th century, the Inns of Court were the intellectual, literary and social heart of London. Here pivotal friendships were forged, few closer than Bulstrode Whitelocke and Edward (Ned) Hyde. Two well-connected, lively and principled young men, they dreamed of reforming the government of Charles I by restoring harmony with the Crown and Parliament. This is the story of how their hopes were shattered and fell into the terrifying abyss of civil war.

Minoo Dinshaw, historian and author of the highly acclaimed Outlandish Knight: the Byzantine life of Steven Runciman is from a literary background: his mother is the writer Candia McWilliam and his father is Fram Dinshaw, an Oxford Don who is a scholar of 17th century English literature
