Two short films: The Dog That Couldn’t Bark and Merman

Orford Museum presents two outstanding short films, both with strong Suffolk connections.
The Dog That Couldn’t Bark, starring Dame Maureen Lipman, was filmed at Glemham Hall by director/producer Henry Tomlinson and tells the story of an elderly lady at the end of her life sharing a secret from her childhood with her palliative care nurse. Henry Tomlinson has worked with some of the world’s finest talent including Dame Maggie Smith, Joan Plowright, Sir Alec Guinness, George Clooney and Matt Damon.
In Merman, written and directed by Madeleine Wynn, Mari is haunted by what she has seen while carrying out humanitarian work with refugees in the Mediterranean. She returns to her parents’ coastal home in Suffolk and there, through an unlikely acquaintance, she discovers the medieval legend of the Merman of Orford. The truth behind this seemingly innocent myth is darker than Mari could imagine. Merman has won a number of international awards including Best Female Director and best First Time Filmmaker at London Art Film Awards 2025 and stars Phil Davis (Bleak House; Sherlock) and Alistair Petrie (The Night Manager; Sex Education).
Both films are very much a community effort and all proceeds from these screenings will go to Orford Museum.
