William Whyte: Oxford University: a history in stone, silk and blood

February 27, 2027 @ 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm

William Whyte‘s new book asks: does the university have a future? To answer that question, we need to understand the past. The story of the university is, in many respects, the story of what is worth arguing about, what it matters to a society. That is why it is more than just the history of thought. In this lecture, William wil chart the growth and development of universities from medieval Paris to the present day. As a rather different sort of university history, he will emphasize the importance of things and places, looking at how these institutions were created, shaped and sometimes threatened by material matters.

After growing up in Iken, William Whyte headed to Oxford University where he is now Professor of Social and Architectural History and a Fellow of St John’s College. A trustee of English Heritage and Chair of the Blue Plaques Panel, he is an Honorary Canon of Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford and the author or editor of more than a dozen books.
