In the interim\, these 12 square miles of the Suffolk Sandlings and were used as a testing ground for armoured equipment and assault techniques that would be used to great effect on D Day and beyond. John Ogden tells the story of this remarkable and little understood intervention in recent history of the local area\, which had ramifications far beyond its more normally tranquil countryside. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAfter reading history at Durham and a brief flirtation with the wine trade\, John Ogden joined the Army on a short service commission and\, unlike most of his contemporaries\, he then forgot to leave for the subsequent 34 years. He lives in Walderingfield and is currenlty Rear Commodore of its sailing club\, a member of the nascent Southwold Harbour Board\, and a trustee of Landguard Fort. When Robert Forth’s eldest son Charles was allegedly allured into marrying Elizabeth Jerningham\, he was scandalised. He reluctantly accepted the marriage\, but it failed nonetheless. This talk will recount its sad ending and explore the interactions between social expectations and religious loyalties during the later years of Elizabeth I’s reign. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nRalph Houlbrooke was Emeritus Professor of Early Modern History at the University of Reading with a particular interest in social history and the Reformation. The talk will identify the myths from reality and seek to explain his “Dream of Glory”. \n\n\n\nPeter is a retired senior partner of a large law firm and now a regular speaker on Naval and Maritime History subjects and in particular Horatio Nelson. He is a long-standing member of the Nelson Society and has Masters’ Degrees in Maritime History from Greenwich University and History from Cambridge University. It’s a mystery why there are so many woodwoses in Suffolk and so few elsewhere. There are some Medieval accounts of Suffolk encounters with wildmen\, including a captive wildman in Orford Castle. \n\n\n\nIn this talk\, freelance journalist and author Matt Salusbury presents an extensive survey of Suffolk wildmen – and possibly at least one wildwoman. What are their origins? Were they just a cultural import from Northern Europe? \n\n\n\nMatt is also an English language teacher and the author of Mystery Animals of Suffolk (Leiston Press 2023). He lived in Dunwich and Chediston throughout the 2010s and is still Chair of the Trustees of Dunwich Museum and well as BBC Radio Suffolk’s big cat expert. The Trust uncovered evidence of the Boudican Revolt\, including the remains of a house\, which had been destroyed by fire\, and the remarkable Fenwick Treasure. As a volunteer\, David led a National Trust programme to find and record the memories of Orford Ness ‘Veterans’. The facts and memories shared by 55 Vets motivated him and other volunteers to urgently work on acquiring and adding new information to that already published by the National Trust. \n\n\n\nDavid’s talk will include an overview of the vast range of military technologies that were carried out on the Ness\, together with an explanation of the various projects newly discovered by independent researchers – now branded as IRGON. \n\n\n\nIt will also demonstrate IRGON’s use of CGI intended to give the public ‘virtual tours’ of the Ness and the interior its many iconic structures. Analysis of the Vets’ recordings by a Framlingham-born\, Canadian Sociology Professor\, in his academic work on ‘Secrecy’ will be explained\, as will the boost given to our research by AWE Aldermaston supplying 850 declassified files. \n\n\n\nCan you help?
